Warning: Never Leave Dogs in the Car!

Cracking Open a Window Does Not Help!

Every year, despite numerous warnings, hundreds of dogs in the U.S. die after being left in hot cars. This crucial message could save the life of a dog you know.

The Danger: Six Minutes to Overheat

In just six minutes, a dog can suffer severe injury or even death from overheating in a hot car. Here's what you need to know:

Fast-Heating Cars: The Science

  • Rapid Temperature Rise: The temperature inside a closed vehicle can double within just 12 minutes.
  • Quick Danger Zone: At least 75% of the temperature increase happens within the first 5 minutes, and 89% within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.
  • Deadly Heat Levels: Temperatures exceeding 104˚F (40˚C) can lead to death or serious injury.
  • Extreme Conditions: A car sitting in the sun can reach a deadly 160˚F (71˚C) and above. Dogs can suffer immeasurably and may die even before temperatures reach 150˚F.
  • Shade Isn’t Safe: Even in the shade, a car can become dangerously hot, exceeding 104˚F.

Myths vs. Facts

  • Cracking Windows Doesn’t Work: Leaving windows down more than 2 inches will not prevent the car from reaching extreme temperatures.
  • Invisible Damage: Even if a dog appears revived after overheating, severe internal organ damage can still lead to death.

Your Responsibility

Your dog trusts you to keep them safe. Don’t risk their safety by leaving them in the car, even for a short time.

What to Do

  • Leave Them at Home: If your dog can't join you at your destination, it’s best to leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.
  • Spread the Word: Share this message with others to prevent more unnecessary deaths.

By understanding and spreading awareness of the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars, you can help save lives. Remember, if your dog can't come with you, they are safest at home.
