As soon as Sandy Williams, the director of the shelter, heard about the abandoned canine who needed her help, she dashed to the site to rescue him. The first thing she noticed when she arrived was a “Beware of the dog” sign that was posted in front of the pup’s former home. Williams became cautious as she walked towards the house, not knowing who she would find. After hearing footsteps approaching him, Wilbur appeared from under the porch where he was lying. He looked incredibly sad. “Every rib on his body was showing. His face was literally sunk in from going so long without food and water. What I remember most was his tear-stained face. He felt frightened and he kept his distance. Williams knew that Wilbur was hungry, so she offered him some food. The doggo let go of his fear and decided to trust her. She rushed him to the vet’s office, so that he could get a complete medical checkup and the care he needed. The vet informed Williams that the pup had a potential head trauma. He was also infected with heartworm. People who saw Wilbur at the vet’s office that day felt deeply saddened to see him in such a state. Everyone showered him with cuddles, which the canine needed more than ever before. After seeing how much they cared for him, Wilbur started feeling a bit better. While his rescuer and his caregivers petted him, the doggo timidly wagged his tail for the very first time. They felt overjoyed because they knew that Wilbur now trusted them. Williams and the shelter staff posted about Wilbur’s heartbreaking situation on Facebook. People who saw the post were deeply moved by the tears in Wilbur’s beautiful eyes. Many of the pup’s well-wishers from across the country offered to take him home. The sweet dog moved in with his foster family and he fit in perfectly in their home in Tunica, Mississippi. The family’s other four dogs accepted Wilbur and welcomed him to the pack. Wilbur’s foster family fell in love with him and decided to make him a permanent member of the family. His parents promised Wilbur that they would cherish him forever.
